Intro to Socks



Class Description:

Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey into the world of knitting socks? This beginner sock knitting class is designed for those eager to learn the fundamental techniques required to knit their own cozy, customized socks. Over the course of four weeks, participants will delve into the art of sock knitting, gaining confidence with each stitch as they create their very own pair of handmade socks.

Class Schedule:

Week 1: Getting Started

  • Introduction to sock knitting and materials needed
  • Overview of basic knitting techniques (casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch)
  • Selecting appropriate yarn and needles
  • Casting on for the cuff of the sock

Week 2: Knitting the Leg

  • Review of casting on
  • Knitting in the round using double-pointed needles or circular needles
  • Understanding sock anatomy (cuff, leg, heel flap, gusset)
  • Knitting the leg section of the sock pattern

Week 3: Turning the Heel

  • Introduction to heel construction
  • Working heel flap and turning the heel
  • Picking up stitches for the gusset
  • Shaping the gusset for a comfortable fit

Week 4: Finishing Touches

  • Review of previous week's techniques
  • Knitting the foot of the sock
  • Toe shaping techniques (decreasing stitches)
  • Binding off and weaving in ends
  • Blocking and finishing your completed pair of socks

Prerequisites: Prior knitting experience is required. This class is open to beginners, but participants should be familiar with basic knitting terminology and have the skills to do these stitches (e.g., knit, purl, casting on).

Materials Required:

  • DK weight yarn in a color of your choice (approximately 100 grams/245 yards)
  • 2 sets of Size US 3 (3.25mm) Double Point Needles (we recommend using wood needles)
  • Stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
